Example of assistance to education of individuals: Kenneth.

Posted on February 11, 2013 by tsudra in News, Students, Students' welfare

KENNETH LUNGE (name has been changed to protect identity)

Kenneth was born in 1988 near Kakamega, in Western Kenya. He is the first born in his family. After him there are two sisters and a brother.

The first years of primary education he did in his home district. He could not always attend  school because there was fighting in his home. The parents split and Kenneth’s mother had to leave home and go with the children in 2001 to Nairobi. The father is probably alive, but does not provide any support.

Kenneth completed in Nairobi his primary education.  He was several times sent home from school because of lack of school fees.

The family lives in Githogoro (a slum in Nairobi ). Kenneth’s sister has finished her primary education but because of lack of money she cannot go to secondary school. She helps at home. Kenneth’s mother has sometimes  temporary work as a house helper. His brother is working as a casual laborer. His youngest sister is still at primary school.

Kenneth managed to get into high school in 2004, but right after he was again sent home because of lack of school fees. That is the time when the vegetable seller introduced him to trustees of Watu Kwa Watu. They found a friend in Denmark, Mr. Roman, who helped to pay his school fees.

In 2008 Kenneth finished his high school education with good results. With the help of the same Danish friend he could attend a Technical College and has finished it with a Certificate of an electrician. He was consistently one of the best students, always one of the top 3 in the class of 17 to 20.  He has no permanent job yet, but he earns his living, and is assisting his younger sisters. We wish him all the best! He would love to study further towards Diploma (two more years), but for the time being the help he has received has already made a great difference in his life. We are, of course looking for sponsors, who would be willing and able to assist with his further studies in a year or two from today – in early 2014 or 2015.
