Feeding program in 3 slum schools in Nairobi temporarily doubled.

Posted on February 16, 2021 by tsudra in Assistance to orphanages, Assistance to very poor families, Assistance to very poor schools

Since the beginning of Covid-19 pandemics, nearly a year ago, the schools were closed and the feeding program has been changed to serve the neediest families, most of which have lost their main sources of income, as described in the previous postings. Instead of meals prepared at schools for students, schools started to distribute the main staple food, such as ugali flour, beans, rice, sugar etc. Representatives of each student’s family would pick up the supplies once a month. This was to continue until the situation improves and the schools are open again. The schools did reopen on January 4 and the feeding program for students has resumed. At the same time the economic situation of the families has not improved necessitating the continuation of the family feeding. It is a challenge for the fund raising, but luckily the ACH (African Children Haven) of Galveston, TX, USA, the main sponsor of that program, alongside the CIC (Catholic International Community), Nairobi, and Karuna Trust Nairobi, was able to mobilise the necessary funds.

Below is the selection of the photos from the food distributions to the families in Starkid School and Rescue Centre in Githogoro slum, Overseers School in Kangemi slum and St Judah School in Mathare slum in Nairobi, as well as few photos of the children feeding program resumed since January.

Students’ feeding have resumed with the reopening of the schools in January 2021. It is usually a simple breakfast uji (local porrige) on arrival to school and tea at Overseers and for orphanage (Rescue Center) children at Starkid, and a modest lunch in all 3 schools on school days. At Starkid the orphanage children get also supper and all 3 meals every day, including weekends  and holidays.

Below are few recent photos of a lunch at Starkid School and Rescue Center.
